Enhancing community spaces that support early childhood development

At Rosewood Bespoke Joinery, we’re not always creating corporate spaces. Working with SureStart, we had the opportunity to create beautiful and child-friendly environments that make a significant impact. Our recent collaboration with Little Hands SureStart in Derry/Londonderry is a shining example of our commitment to enhancing community spaces that support early childhood development.

Project Overview

SureStart provides essential services to children from antenatal stages to three years old, focusing on health, education, play, physical development, and speech and language. To better serve families, SureStart identified the need for a quality improvement project—one that would create a more welcoming, functional, and enriching environment for children and parents alike.
Working in collaboration with H&J Martin Group, Rosewood Bespoke Joinery created custom joinery solutions to meet the brief of a home-from-home feel alongside playful and colourful spaces for the families.

Key Project Areas

Reception Area: A Home from Home

The first point of contact for families needed to be warm, welcoming, and practical. Rosewood Bespoke Joinery crafted custom toy storage cabinets finished in muted colours alongside H3171 Kendal Oak storage cabinets and a seating area. The improved layout ensures a clear sense of direction, helping visitors feel at ease as soon as they arrive.

Observation Room: Little Land – Big Adventures for Little Hands

This imaginative space was transformed into a dynamic learning area with custom-built and painted storage houses, helping to create themed stations that will rotate bi-monthly. From a farmer’s market to a vet’s clinic, children now have role-playing opportunities that enhance their social, cognitive, and communication skills, ensuring they receive a well-rounded developmental experience.
The colours used for the toy storage were U125 Sand Yellow, U638 Sage Green, U636 Fjord Green, U540 Denim Blue, U325 Antique Rose, and U104 Alabaster White.

The Result

According to Sharon White, Project Manager at SureStart, the project exceeded expectations:
“The experience was fantastic. Their professionalism, communication, and commitment to delivering on time made a huge difference. The final result is even better than we had anticipated, and we’ve had wonderful feedback from families and staff about the quality of workmanship.”
We’re proud to support SureStart’s mission to give children the best start in life. Through strategic design and expert delivery, we’ve helped create a space that enriches the experiences of young families for years to come.
